It's no mystery that showing up consistently on social media benefits your business's reach, your connection with customers and your memorability with them.

But why is it so hard to make content that actually does something?

My answer? Most businesses are planning what to post. Not what to say.

The reality is, the majority of businesses are reactive rather than proactive with their content. Rather than planning ahead, it's a realisation that you haven't posted in three weeks, it isn't bringing in new customers and you have no idea what to share.

A beautiful feed isn't the differentiator it used to be. Templates are everywhere, everyone's colour palette is considered, and looking good is now the entry fee, not the advantage. Aesthetics get you past the scroll. Value is what gets you saved, shared, remembered and eventually, hired.

Which brings me to the one thing your content plan should be built around:

Bring value. People don't care until you give them a reason to.

Not "post more". Not "post prettier". Bring value.

So here are my top 4 tips for planning content around the only thing your audience actually cares about:

1. START WITH YOUR PEOPLE, NOT YOUR CONTENT

You can't be valuable to someone you haven't defined. Who are you actually talking to? What do they care about, worry about, get frustrated by? What are they Googling at 11pm? What do they wish someone would just explain properly?

Most content plans start with a calendar. Yours should start with a person.

2. GET SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT VALUE LOOKS LIKE TO THEM

Value isn't only "here's a helpful tip". Depending on your audience, it might be clarity on something confusing. Reassurance they're not doing it wrong. A shortcut that saves them an afternoon. A strong opinion they can borrow. Or proof — real proof — that what you do works.

Ask what your audience would take away from the post. If the answer is "nothing, but it looked nice", it isn't ready.

3. FILTER IT THROUGH WHO YOU ARE

This is where your fundamentals earn their keep. Your values, your goals, your brand visuals, your colour palette, your tone of voice — these aren't the starting point, they're the filter. They decide how the value is delivered so it's unmistakably yours.

Valuable but off-brand builds someone else's business. On-brand but empty builds nothing.

4. PLAN AHEAD SO VALUE IS REPEATABLE

Anyone can produce one genuinely useful post. The businesses that win are the ones producing them on a schedule.

That means planning in blocks, not in panic. Batch your themes for the month. Shoot your images in one go, hire a photographer, get a creative to design something proper, but brief them against what you're actually trying to say, not just how you want it to look. Build a bank you can pull from so a busy week doesn't turn into a silent month.

Proactive content isn't about being more organised. It's about giving yourself the room to be useful.
